Reflections:
The courses I took my second semester in the MMI program included Introduction to Medical Informatics and Health Care Operations. Overall in the Introduction to Medical Informatics course there was a plethora of information presented via the text, multimedia presentations, and additional reading assignments. A five-part project was spread out over most of the course. I was acting as a consultant, hired by a hospital organization, in an effort to guide the institution through the process of choosing and implementing electronic medical records (EMR). Phases of the project followed a natural progression from gathering data, performing a needs assessment, providing options such as a “home grown “ versus “off the shelf” EMR's, and presenting pro’s and con’s of each system. Regulatory compliance issues such as Meaningful Use compliance, privacy and security were addressed. Finally a detailed training and implementation plan was presented.
I feel the course content and assignments adequately met the goals outlined in the syllabus quite well. Sadly, there was little opportunity for interaction with the instructor, which was unfortunate since he was extremely knowledgeable of the subject matter and had extensive personal experience in the field.
