Welcome
Thank you for viewing my e-portfolio, which illustrates my journey through the Medical Informatics Masters program at Northwestern University. Two years ago, I had never even heard the term “medical informatics” and now I have completed my course work, and am finishing my capstone project for a master’s degree.
I began my journey in the healthcare field as a surgical intensive care nurse; I loved working in an area where new technologies were rapidly emerging. After practicing nursing for ten years, I became a dentist, attending Loyola University College of Dentistry in Chicago, and have been a practicing dentist for 20 years, always looking for a way to improve myself.
Early on in my dental practice, I became obsessed with technology and the possibilities to improve the efficiency of my dental practice with electronic patient records. By 1996, I had built a new office with the goal of becoming a high tech paperless practice; this became a reality within a year.
I am a native of Chicago but tired of the relentless winters, my husband and two daughters picked up and moved to southern California four years ago. People ask me how I could possibly get two teenagers to move across the country, my response is, it’s easy, just tell them they can take surfing for their PE requirement and there are no complaints!
I love dentistry yet I was itching for something new, I needed a way to challenge myself but was not knowing exactly what that was. After some soul searching, I realized two things I really enjoy are technology and healthcare; the question then became how could I combine these into a new career? A quick search on the Internet and I decided to pursue a degree in Medical Informatics. I began the program at Northwestern University the summer of 2011, taking two courses each semester certainly was challenging, especially with a family and career.
My future plan is to secure within the informatics field a position where I can use my background in nursing and dentistry along with the knowledge and skills from the MMI program.
